Cedarhurst Center for the Arts presents “A Forest of Signs: Josephine Stealey, Sun Smith-Foret, Ann Coddington” and “The Art of the Cedarhurst Basketeers,” two separate, but theme-related exhibits on view October 19–December 29, 2019.
Both exhibits emphasize the tradition and innovation of basketry in the US. Each artist or group represents an aesthetic influenced directly or indirectly by basketry. The Basketeers explore tradition. Sun Smith-Fôret using natural materials—branches, twine, minerals—to create objects that reimagine past archetypes that suggest the continuing influence of long-forgotten rituals. Ann Coddington starting with the body as referent presents minimal forms knotted in traditional techniques that ultimately point to a collective unconscious. Josephine Stealey inspired by traditional basketry and the vessel moves beyond those forms using natural materials and handmade paper to create modern tabernacles, reliquaries, and books that reexamine age old tensions between nature and culture.
Opening reception: Saturday, October 19, 2019, 6-8:30 p.m. & artists’ gallery talk 6 p.m. Members free, Public $5.
